Zapata Ranch

Soundscape Collective would like to thank Denver Arts & Venues for the grant of $7,500 from the Denver Music Advancement Fund for our 2021 Music Resident Pilot Project. Our activities made an impact not only on members of of Denver Music Community, but also built new partnerships while strengthening existing ones. We look forward to expanding on our success while learning from challenges and shortfalls. From all of us here at Soundscape Collective, we’d like to extend our sincere gratitude to the folks at Denver Arts & Venues for believing in our vision and giving us a chance to impact our beloved Denver Music Community. Without their support, none of this work would have been possible.

For the 2021 program, Soundscape Collective invited a Colorado-based producer along two Denver-based musicians to participate in a music residency pilot program that spanned both urban and rural landscapes. The intention was to create a place-based creative retreat where the musicians could escape distraction and completely submerge themselves in work and environment.

The Resident Producer, Inaiah Lujan, collaborated with two alternating musicians, Anna Morsett and Wes Watkins, who each spent 2 days at Zapata Ranch, creating and recording material.  Our host partners at Ranchlands provided a beautiful home on the property to use for the duration our stay.

The Medano-Zapata Ranch is owned by The Nature Conservancy and managed by Ranchlands in a partnership model that emphasizes environmental conservation practices. Located on the eastern edge of the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado, the ranch borders the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, the newest national park in the United States.

Chico Basin Ranch | Maiden Voyage | November 2020

Excited to offer a closer look into Soundscape Collective’s mission, work, and our first Ranchlands adventure.

The stars aligned and we were fortunate to have Inaiah Lujan, Jesse Elliott, and Yasi as our test subjects for this first residency “experiment.” A lot of fun was had & music created with lessons o’ plenty learned along the way. Looking forward to what 2021 has in store! It’s sure to include a familiar cast of characters: music, experimentation, collaborations, and the open road.

*Super bummed that we weren’t able to feature Yasi in the video; we hope to remedy that in a future feature!
